Liz Watson to bring world champion status to TAB Champions Stakes Day

1 November 2023 Written by VRC

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) today announced that Australian Diamonds captain and 2023 Netball World Champion Liz Watson will swap the court for the Flemington track on TAB Champions Stakes Day, Saturday 11 November 2023.

Widely regarded as one of the best netballers in the world, Liz will be trackside alongside other champions of sport to take in all the action including no fewer than three Group 1 features that showcase the stars of Australian turf over 1200m, 1600m and 2000m.

Liz made her Australian Diamonds debut in 2016 when she stepped onto the court against England in Liverpool. In 2017, she won the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball Young Star Award for her work with the Melbourne Vixens. In 2018 and again in 2022, she was awarded Australian netball’s most prestigious award, the Liz Ellis Diamond, for her outstanding efforts running the midcourt both domestically and internationally.

Fresh off a Netball World Cup win earlier this year, Liz said she was looking forward to experiencing the magic of Cup Week.

“I love Melbourne Cup Carnival time and I can’t wait to get to Flemington to catch up with friends and family on TAB Champions Stakes Day,” Liz said.

“The Diamonds have had a great year so far on the court and it’s wonderful to be able to come and celebrate that success at one of my favourite major events, the Melbourne Cup Carnival.”

VRC Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosich said he was delighted to welcome Liz to TAB Champion Stakes Day and toast to the Australian Diamonds' success at Cup Week.

“Liz has cemented herself as not only netball royalty but an Australian sporting superstar,” Mr Rosich said.

“TAB Champions Stakes Day is all about celebrating excellence and Liz has proven herself on and off the court since she was a teenager. We’re delighted she will be joining us as a Melbourne Cup Carnival Ambassador this year.”

Watson will join an all-star lineup including Australian Matilda Cortnee Vine, the nieces of the late Princess Diana and models Lady Eliza Spencer and Lady Amelia Spencer, international model and body diversity advocate Georgina Burke and member of the Danish Royal Family and model Count Nikolai of Monpezat, as Melbourne Cup Carnival Ambassadors for 2023.

The 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival kicks off with Penfolds Victoria Derby Day on Saturday 4 November, followed by Lexus Melbourne Cup Day on 7 November, Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday 9 November and TAB Champions Stakes Day on Saturday 11 November.
All the action from the 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival can be seen live and free on 10 and 10 Play.
