Oliver to saddle up for final Cup

6 November 2023 Written by Racing & Sports

Damien Oliver will get to ride Alenquer in his final Melbourne Cup ride.

The Mike Moroney-trained Alenquer has been passed fit to start in the Melbourne Cup after an early morning veterinary inspection.

It now paves the way for champion jockey to have his 32nd and final ride in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday.

Alenquer was under a fitness cloud after the Moroney stable reported the gelding was suffering from a stone bruise on Sunday.

Racing Victoria vets reported Alenquer was still showing sign of soreness in his left front foot on Monday before passing his final inspection on Tuesday morning.

As a precaution, Alenquer will be re-examined when he arrives on-course at Flemington ahead of the Melbourne Cup which is timed to run at 3pm.

Oliver is riding in the Cup for the last time before he retires from racing at the conclusion of the Perth Summer Carnival next month.

The only scratching from the Melbourne Cup is Cleveland who was withdrawn on Monday evening with an elevated temperature.
