7 January 2023 Written by VRC

The Victoria Racing Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of highly respected and influential thoroughbred owner and breeder Sir Patrick Hogan.

While at the helm of New Zealand’s famous Cambridge Stud, Sir Patrick was responsible for breeding seven Melbourne Cup winners, with six coming via his remarkable stallions Sir Tristram and Zabeel.

VRC Chairman Neil Wilson paid tribute to Sir Patrick, who died at the age of 83.

“The VRC joins the racing and breeding world in mourning Sir Patrick Hogan, a trailblazer for the New Zealand thoroughbred industry and one of the most successful breeders in Melbourne Cup history,” Mr Wilson said.

“Sir Patrick left his mark on Flemington as the stud master behind Melbourne Cup champions Gurners Lane, Empire Rose, Brew, Might and Power, Jezabeel, Ethereal and Efficient but also as the breeder of Flemington Group 1 winners Zabeel, Octagonal and Preferment among others.

“Sir Patrick bred another special horse in four-time Melbourne Cup runner Precedence, who many will remember as Bart Cummings’ final competitor in the great race alongside his grandson James.

“Sir Patrick was a proud supporter of the Melbourne Cup and the VRC, providing a warm welcome to the Melbourne Cup tour on more than one occasion at his former Cambridge Stud.

“Sir Patrick’s stallions have produced seven Melbourne Cup winners and we are sure his legacy will continue in Australia’s greatest race.

“The VRC sends its condolences to Lady Justine Hogan and Sir Patrick’s entire family.”
