Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour brings hope and healing to Katherine

8 August 2024 Written by VRC

On its recent journey through the Northern Territory, the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour stopped at Katherine, a town that welcomed the iconic trophy for the second time with open arms and hearts.

Katherine’s application to host the Cup and be a part of the National Sweep was driven by their desire to support Dolly’s Dream, a charity established by Tick and Kate Everett who lost their daughter, Amy ‘Dolly’ Everett, to suicide at just 14 years of age.

Dolly’s Dream raises awareness surrounding bullying and has had a profound impact, providing life-saving programs to combat bullying and its devastating effects.

Tick and Kate Everett embraced the opportunity to honour Dolly through the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour once again, after it first visited the community in 2019.

They are excited to be a part of the National Sweep, in which Dolly’s Dream will earn $50,000 to further their incredible work if their nominated horse wins on the first Tuesday in November.

“If we were to win, that money would be invested straight back into the rural community, with some of our workshops and mental health first aid,” Kate Everett shared. “This is where we started, and these are the people that have got our back. Taking our supporters on that journey with us will be incredible.”

Kate expressed the spirit of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour beautifully: “We belong to an amazing community, and we’re very, very grateful. Not only just Katherine but the entire NT has been so supportive of Dolly’s Dream. We’re very blessed to have the VRC on board with us and enable us to bring the Cup here. It’s kind of thanks from us to the community of Katherine, I guess.”

The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour’s visit to Katherine also included the participation of three-time Lexus Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Glen Boss. He joined the festivities at the 59th annual Katherine Show, riding the Cup into the arena to kick off the rodeo and participating in the camp draft. “I always love being part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour and sharing the magic of the People’s Cup with the community,” Boss said
